HEALESVILLE CAMERA CLUB
Preliminary meetings have been held by a group of local enthusiasts, and the Healesville Camera Club has been formed and shows good prospects of having a successful career. The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month. A constitution has been tentatively set down, and a sub-committee has drafted a six month’s syllabus of meetings and outings. An important feature is that, as far as practicable, talks on and demonstrations of photographic principles and art have been arranged so that they will be relevant to the monthly outings which will follow approximately a fortnight after each nightly meeting.

A local professional portraitist, Mr. Elton Fox, has been elected as President; Mr. J. Sinclair, who specializes in color photography, as Vice-President; and Mr. F.J. Roberts, pictorial worker, as Secretary-Treasurer. The first general meeting will be held on Tuesday 6th March. A cordial invitation is extended to any photographers visiting the district to attend any meeting or outing during their stay.

At the March meeting the final draft of the constitution and competition rules was adopted and several new members enrolled.

The feature of the evening was a most enlightening talk by President Elton Fox on the history, fundamentals and principles of photography. Mr. Pox (who has had considerable experience in commercial art) used his talents to great advantage by presenting a number of sketches illustrating various phases of his address. Thus he graphically conveyed to the younger and the lesser experienced members just how photographs are made and by what means, from the earliest types of box cameras to the present-day models.

The first club outing took place also in March and proved very successful, and it is expected that a large number of entries will be lodged for the first competition at the April meeting.

Now in its sixth month, this club musters a membership of twenty. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month, and outings relevant to the “set” subject for the month are held approximately two weeks later. Judging for all competitions is done by other clubs. July set subject was “Portraiture”, in support of which President Elton Fox gave an instructive and practical demonstration in his studio.

At the August meeting, prints from the June and July competitions were displayed and judges comments on each were read. Club Secretary, Mr. F.J. Roberts, then gave a talk and demonstration on Still Life Photography,” after which members individually tried their skill at arranging various objects for table-top photography.

The club is at present conducting a local residents open competition for the best snow photographs made in Healesville during July.

A library is now being established for free circulation amongst members, and the club hopes to be able to install its own darkroom in the near future. Visitors from other clubs or towns are cordially invited to attend any of the club’s meetings or outings.

Location of the December outing was Lake Yumbunga, at which members secured some delightful water studies under ideal weather conditions. The subject for next outing is “Night Photography”, and it is hoped to include camp-fire scenes (per barbecue) as well as building and street shots in the town.

The club intends holding its first Annual Club and Invitation Exhibition early in March. As it is desired to make this a really successful show, an invitation is extended to clubs and individual photographers to participate in the display. Prints should reach the Healesville Camera Club Hon.Secretary (F.J. Roberts) not later than February 29th. Exhibitors are assured that every care will be taken with their prints and postage will be paid both ways by Healesville Camera Club.

Residents in Sydney may deposit their entries at The A.P.-R. Editorial Office, 1st Floor, 386 George Street, for forwarding in bulk on February 21st.

The Annual Meeting on March 3rd disclosed a very satisfactory state for the Club’s first year. Membership had reached 23 and the balance sheet showed revenue of £32/11/0, expenditure £20/2/0 leaving a fund balance of £l2/9/0.

The election of officers resulted in the re-election of the retiring President (Mr. Elton Fox) and the Secretary/Treasurer (F.J. Roberts). Mr. J. Remington was appointed Vice-President.

During the year the procedure has been to deal with some particular subject or phase of photography at monthly meetings and each subsequent outing mainly followed the same line. The subject thus dealt with became the “set” subject for each monthly competition.

A club library has been instituted for loan circulation amongst members and a club darkroom is now in process of installation. Climax to the year’s work was the holding of the Club’s First Annual Members and Invitation Exhibition in which over 300 prints were hung. These comprised exhibits from various other clubs, private contributors, A.P.-R. Invitation Salon prints and the club’s own sections of competitive and non-competitive prints. About 450 people attended the show which extended over five days.

The Club meets on the first Monday in each month and holds an outing on the second Sunday following. A cordial invitation is extended to any photographers visiting the district to take part in these activities.

On 22nd February the club staged a seaside picnic outing to Rickett’s Point which was highly successful from both photographic and social aspects. As so often happens on photographic outings, cloud arrangements went hay-wire, as there was only a narrow band which rested on the horizon all day. However, the weather was delightful and some very good shots have emerged.

The current fixture is the club’s Second Annual Members and Invitation Exhibition. The show is open for day and evening sessions and attracts a great amount of interest amongst local residents and holiday week-enders. No charge is made for admission but a donation box is conveniently placed at the exit side of the doorway. Although no pictures are shown up there, many viewers suddenly display an intense interest in the ceiling on the way out.

The exhibits comprise a magnificent collection from various Melbourne, provincial and country clubs, as well as a fine lot of A.P.-R. prizewinners and the E.R. Robertson One-Man-Show, for both of which we are exceedingly grateful to Kodak Ltd. The club’s Annual Competition prints are also displayed prior to being sent away for judging.

The February meeting featured talks by President Elton Fox and Secretary Fred Roberts on Seascapes and Landscapes, and a showing of lantern slides illustrating those subjects. The club will heartily welcome any residents of surrounding districts or visitors to any meeting on the first Friday of each month or outing on the second following Sunday.

HEALESVILLE CAMERA CLUB
Color photography is a new and highly entertaining development in the activities of the Healesville Camera Club and on Thursday evening last week, members and friends were treated to a display of beautiful slides taken by members. The projector and screen were kindly loaned by Mr. J. Taylor. Each member contributing to the program operated the projector himself and gave descriptions and notes regarding his pictures which comprised Kodachrome photographs of Melbourne and various city and country scenes in other States.

Another very interesting feature was the personal inspection by everyone present of some excellent examples of pictorial photography in a traveling portfolio of prints from prominent photographic clubs. One picture which created a great deal of interest was a striking view of what could be taken for one of the peaks in the Swiss Alps. Each person was invited to estimate the height of the peak and opinions varied from 50 feet to 15,000 feet. The surprise of all can be imagined when the announcement was made that it was a 9-foot high heap of mining slag taken at the old Black Hill mining area at Ballarat. Each member club of the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies is entitled to submit two prints for each round of the portfolio which circulates amongst the leading Melbourne photographic clubs and many others in the State. A popular vote of members present resulted in prints made by M. Elton and D. Fox being selected for inclusion in the current round.

The secretary (Mr. F.J. Roberts) announced that the Ballarat Camera Club was very desirous of having a collection of Healesville Camera Club prints sent for display at one of their meetings in the near future, and also that there is a good possibility of the Annual Convention of the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies being held at Healesville in a few months time, when it is expected about 100 delegates will spend a week-end here for business sessions and photographic expeditions.

HEALESVILLE CAMERA CLUB
At the monthly meeting on Thursday last week, the secretary (Mr. F. J. Roberts ) reported on his movements amongst the photographic fraternity during his recent holiday in Sydney. Greetings were exchanged between him, as representing the Healesville Camera Club, and the Photographic Society of New South Wales, the Sydney Camera Circle and the Y.M.C.A. Camera Club, all of which extend invitations to any Healesville-ites interested in photography to attend their meetings. Comparison of work shown at all these clubs quite satisfied the visitor that the Healesville Camera Club is well up in the technique of producing artistic photographs.

An important contact was made with Mr Keast Burke, a leading executive of Kodak Ltd., resulting in the booking of Kodachrome color slides, comprising "The 56 Best of Recent Kodak Competitions," and others to make up a full evening's showing. A date for this will be announced later. At the 11th Victorian International Salon (just concluded at the lower Melbourne Town Hall), Mr Roberts met one of the old stalwarts of pictorial photography in Australia Mr John B. Eaton, whose work is known here and overseas. He, without solicitation, offered the loan of 150 original prints made by the late Dr. Julian Smith, who was world-renowned for outstanding character studies. The display of these pictures also will be announced later.

It is now decided that the first annual convention of the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies will be held on Queen's Birthday weekend in June, when up to 150 members and friends are expected to attend. The responsibility of arranging accommodation and planning outings has been delegated to Healesville Camera Club.

With a view to its long cherished ambition to provide facilities and instruction to beginners, the Healesville Camera Club is embarking on a strong move toward establishing a darkroom, complete with all requirements for use by members. Information regarding membership and subscriptions may be had from the President (Mr R. Deans King) and secretary (Mr F.J. Roberts).

HEALESVILLE CAMERA CLUB
Now in its fourth year, the Healesville Camera Club is looking forward to even better times for its work during the current season. Monthly print competitions have been resumed and special efforts are being made towards establishing a darkroom in the hope of attracting new members who have not adequate facilities for home processing.

Several members have recently taken up color transparency work and this has resulted in some very pleasant and entertaining evenings at the club. A working-bee was held recently for the purpose of binding magazines and booklets contained in the club library.

The club extends a cordial invitation to any amateur photographers within convenient distance of and any visitors to the Healesville district to attend any of our meetings which are held on the first Thursday monthly, or the monthly outings on the second Sunday afternoon after the meeting.
